Investment Strategy

PenderFund Capital Management is a value-based, forward thinking fund manager with expertise in identifying investment opportunities in undervalued companies with the potential for significant capital appreciation. We work with like-minded portfolio managers who believe that the best way to generate superior risk adjusted returns is to select concentrated portfolios of superior businesses that are undervalued.

In 2008, the world changed and investors' appetite for risk decreased dramatically.  In the current environment, the most important objectives are capital preservation, income and low-relative volatility.  At Pender we are committed to bringing funds to market that are driven by these three objectives relative to their respective asset class.

The funds are designed around:

  • being investment-led (not marketing-led) and aligned with our unitholders,
  • the idea that small and nimble funds are not restricted by structural impediments and can access opportunities that are either under the radar or too small for bigger fund managers to profit from, and
  • value investing, meaning Pender is better able to aim for capital preservation, downside protection and ultimately superior returns for our investors.

All of the Pender funds are still small enough to be able to get in and out of positions without significantly affecting the market.
