Who We Are

PenderFund Capital Management is a Vancouver based investment management company bringing specialty mutual fund products to advisors and their clients. Our goal is to create value by generating superior risk-adjusted returns, protecting capital and minimizing downside risk.

PenderFund Capital Management (PCM) was founded in 2003 with the launch of the Pender Growth Fund (PGF), focused on the technology sector in BC’s Venture Capital market. The Fund invested in established but undervalued technology companies. Investors in the fund were issued with a 30% cash-back tax credit from the provincial government under the Small Business Venture Capital Act (SBVCA).

In 2008, PenderFund expanded into mainstream investments. Building on its value-oriented investment strategy, the goal was to become a leading west coast mutual fund company.

Later that year, Kelly Edmison, President of PCM, and David Barr, Chief Investment Officer of PCM, met Matt Shandro of Fulcra Asset Management, a former portfolio manager at CI Investments and Marret Asset Management, who had begun his fixed income career 15 years earlier as a high yield analyst at Vancouver-based Deans Knight. In June 2009, Pender launched the Pender Corporate Bond Fund, with Matt Shandro as portfolio advisor.

At the same time David Barr launched the Pender Small Cap Opportunities Fund. The fund was based on the same investment philosophies he had used to manage PGF and took advantage of his in-depth understanding of the space. However, it was free from the investment constraints prescribed by the SBVCA on PGF, which was capped in 2010.

Pender launched two new funds in November 2010. The Pender Canadian Equity Fund, with Dixon Mitchell advising, and the Pender Balanced Fund, combining the investment expertise of all three portfolio advisors into a one-stop fund.

In March 2011, less than two years after the launch of its mutual fund business, the Company passed the $100 million assets under management milestone. Pender continues to grow rapidly.
